Title: New Paint
Post by Knotacare on Jul 30th, 2012 at 7:17am
I finally took the 73 over to the paint shop this morning. I took off almost everything I could so I can re install myself. I'll be stopping by almost every day to get pictures & updates. The front clip is a little cocked to the left, but should be easy to correct & the doors need to be moved forward a bit. Other than this it's a easy paint job...no stress cracks :) I as stated in the other post it's going from Silver to Copper Red Mica (almost like candy apple red)

Did you decide on which type of front bumper cover you are going to put on the car?

Staying with fiberglass ,it's cheaper to repair & looks better (no waves). He might even repair the one that's on there ?? This guy is a good as they come when it comes to fiberglass. :)

ahh, so you kept the old bumper and just had them fix it.  that would account for the deal you got. good thing the insurance company quoted replacing it. I've done something like this before too. do what you gotta do right..

I'm guessing next week, it's almost ready for paint now. When he starts it's usually never more than a week. I have learned not to take a car over until he promises to start that day. I stopped over after lunch & it's pretty much sanded now. :)

Alan,
I thought you always had to strip all the paint fiberglass before painting it? Or is this just when you get layers built up on the surface?

He did strip it those pictures were before the strip down...I'll see if I can get some more today. He was more interest in getting everything repaired & aligned first plus smoothed out. The body was in excellent condition (no stress cracks)

Harry who owns the body shop is also a good friend of mine. I just built his son a gaming computer (his BD is thur) for $400.00. the video card almost cost me that much. So we do a little trading at times. He told me this would cost almost $10K for anyone else. He painted the blue one the same way.

Looking at your last series of pictures gave me a trip down memory lane just like I had mid torn down for painting.  I am waiting for the next series of pictures ot the parts hanging and being painted.  Like I always said if you are going to do a job do it right.

I had a friend in high school and he did his own painting and I helped him prep a car once and he had all the doors and everything off. Took him about 2 months to put it back together though. I'm sure your guy will be a bit quicker. we called him the Bean Man. some of you will get it. he was easily sidetracked at times. Awesome painter though.

Charlie

Title: Re: New Paint

looks good, 10K is what they estimate up here for painting. Not sure they would take the extra steps your guy has taken. Can't wait to see the finished product.

The frontbumper is an issue, I have a urethan (or what's it called) bumper, I think a glasfiber is better for fitting.

Just took his son's computer over & checked the progress. He has the hood straight & real close to final paint now.

He was putting primer on when I was there. :D

Still has to line up the center of the hood..it's off about 1/16" ...hard to see , but he didn't like it.

Yes we must meet up sometime...just let me know what's good for you. I'll send you my cell number. You did a lot over the last year & I'm sure things can get over whelming at times. I know I've been there a few times. As far as the fiberglass repairing I am a novice, but I'll ask Harry & see what he uses. I do see that they do things in many stages which is why it takes so long. He spent the better part of a day just getting the  hood even with the body.

I just bought new tires for it, but could use them on the 68 & 77 or the Dodge. Been thinking about going to 17" wheels & tires. I can get American Racing Bright PVD & Pirelli Cinturato P7 245/55/17 (500AA rating) run flats  for under $1500.00 mounted & balanced from tire rack.
So I'm thinking again

The wheel is new & not available until 8/21/12
Torq-Thrust 2.1(Bright PVD)  my cost $204.00 at tire rack..I'll look around  & see if I can get them cheaper, but the free mount & balance on a high end computer balancer makes it a sweeter deal.

Went over today & he's wet sanding with 1200 to 2000 grit them buffing at least twice. He wanted to wait for the paint to harden which I'm sure it did in this heat in a closed garage :)   I'll see if I can get some more pics tomorrow & will ask some questions about fiberglass repairs. I know he uses different material for different types of repairs & seems to let it dry a long time..like over nite. yhat's why my Blue vet took a few weeks it needed lots of stress crack repairs.

I haven't seen it in the sun yet :(, It's always in a garage where it's dark & dusty...I was gonna keep it silver, but the real boss said NO & chose this color..I think she has better taste than me.. It should be finally cooling down this weekend so I'll be able to put it back together without sweating...boy I hate this humidity. Also been working on my front office ..repainting & laying new carpet. I was forced into to this as the UPS man dropped 4 gallons of motor oil & it leaked all over the carpet. I know I could have complained to UPS, But the guy didn't know he did it & he would probably loose his job. So the carpet was old anyway so he just forced my hand.

I can't say what my dad always says but it shines like a Xxxxxx Xxx. awesome. I've never liked maroon but this has a different look to it. I'm also liking the blacked out rim look. I'm gonna get the 17" wheels just can't decide if I should put them on the 68 or 73. If I put the 17's on the 68 the wheels & tires on the 68 will go to the 73. Whatever I decide the 73 tires will go on the 77.   They have plenty of rubber but to old to really be safe to drive on. I did paint the 73 wheels black when I first got it... I'm sorta leaning on putting the 17's with run flats on the 73 because I'll be driving it much more  than the others. The 275/60/15's on the back of the 68 really hook & might be to much for the 73  and the 245/55/17's are not as wide. Decisions, decisions  :-?

Personally I don't care much for the GM rally wheels.  Guess they were okay but a good set of aftermarket wheels always helped to improve the looks of any car. JMHO

The 17" AR wheels on the '73 would be a killer upgrade from OE style. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

You might want the feel of a taller tire in the 68. with your suspension, i'm sure it's rigid enough already and it might be a bit squirlly with the low pro's. I'm sure if you get bored one weekend you can swap them and see what you like best though.

The car is just so beautiful that words cannot describe it.  I think I would be afraid to drive it now but that is my way with every vehicle that I own except my old pick up.

Alan, car looks good.  With 3 of them it's hard to get enough driving time in on each and if you are like me one becomes the favorite.

My favorite will always be the 68. I've never driven a car I enjoyed more. With 17" tires I think it would handle like a new vet..I can already blow  them off the road in a straight run. But I enjoy driving them all. Took the 67 Dodge out last week & left some marks along the way ;D it gets the trophy for the worst gas mileage 5- 7mpg. So at $4+ become an expensive toy.

If I had a vette like your '68 it would be my favorite too. ;)

Wow! Was I ever out of the loop here.

First, a belated Congrats on the 45th anniversary. You two are a vanishing breed anymore.

Second, that is a fantastic looking 73 now. Red always look good on Corvettes.

Third, Nothing can beat the Blue Monster... that one will always be my favorite Corvette of them all. And I got to ride in it too.  :D

Very, very sorry for being so late.

Don't sweat it you got lots on your table now...at least you are moving in a positive direction ;) Got my wife's SS in the shop now being painted on the left rear quarter. Seems like I've been around that paint shop quite a bit this yr. This is the 8th car he's done for me over the years...I think I deserve a free pass ;D

Yes, RED does look great on a Corvette.  I've always heard all Corvettes should be RED! ::)  Of course, I feel that way about BLUE! ;D ;D ;D

Yes & it has a removable rear window 8-)   very rare for a 73 ...it was called a Jack mod

I would have liked to have done the removable rear window mod when I had mine. that time I had to remove it and re-seal it cause my sub whoofers rattled it loose, I drove around without the window and it was cool. kinda like a beer window. would be cool if you could make it electronic and move up and down like a side window.

I wonder if there is some kind of chrome strip I could use. I just like the looks of it ;)

Not a difficult mod to do but expensive to locate the parts to do it right.
The back window is ready to fall out anyway due to the butyl tape drying out over the years. The most time consuming is installing the new weatherstrip. It really makes it more comfortable to drive in warmer weather and you get to listen to the exhaust real well..........jack
