Title: play in steering - control valve input question
Post by 737fixer on Mar 20th, 2016 at 12:52pm
So my 75 has some play in the steering.  I've looked over the system and found some play where the pitman arm connects to the power steering control valve.  I am not real sure but I believe this is normal,,, as the pitman pushes or pulls on the valve which sends fluid to the cylinder, right?  So just how much play at the power steering control valve is normal?
Here's a video I found on youtube showing exactly what I'm talking about.  Mine doesn't have as much play as this one so I'm thinking mine might be OK...

If nothing has been changed in a 1975 car then it's time. I replaced all the greaseable components & the pitman arm in my 68 when I got it. It still feels tight & that was 14 yrs ago.  If after all components are replaced then you will have to address the power steering box. Don't forget to replace the rag joint.  I feel that steering , breaks & suspension are must do first on any antique car if you plan on driving it.
