Title: Engine and trans swap
Post by IDUNO on Dec 31st, 2018 at 10:05am
Hi there may already be a thread dealing with this thaat I couldn't find. Obviosly a newby hear aquired 2 vettes recently which maybe a bit overkill for a new vette owner. QUESTION looking at pulling 454 out of 73 with 4 speed and replacing so that we can have some fun without hurting matching numbers.
Looked at a crate 496 with 620 hp and 590ft/lb any sugestions on half shafts, transmission or helpfull hints on minimizing damage (haha).    Looks like a great forum and a great bunch Thanks

With that much engine you are gonna spend a fortune on upgrades & where are you gonna drive it. There is such a thing as to much, A 73 can handle 500hp & 660lbs of tq with the right ujoints, drive shaft & half shaft. I'm not sure if the rear in a 73 is HD like the early C-3's.   Going over that will require extensive mods to the drive train & suspension. Good luck

Alan should know as he is running that much power in his Blue Monster. I was with him once when the rear u joint blew when he stomped on it.

well I believe that I found a link here to dragnet I believe, it sounds like the 3.5 half shafts should work and a lot of years of early c3 where mid 400hp so i was hoping we could hold 600 with out having to change rear end. I would love to talk to Allen to see what problems he has had.

I'll send you my cell number & will be happy to talk to you. It isn't the HP as 600 really isn't to bad because you don't get that much off the line. The TQ is different...mine make around 400lbs of tq at around 1000rpm & goes to 550 at around 1700rpm then flat lines. So as we all know vetts hook very well which means something can break if the tires don't break loose. ujoints & half shafts  are the weak areas unless you go to a straight axle.  You make a decision is it a driver or a drag car.

That, I think it is the one question we all ask our selfs.....how much HP do I need? I will leave the HP to my Camaro and the cruise mode for the Vette. In the Vette I want to be able to talk to the people in the lane next to me. Listening to the tunes is also a must too.
